Decorative rock landscaping in St. Petersburg FL

Ground Cover That Never Needs Mowing, Mulching, or Watering

River rock, Mexican beach pebble, crushed shell, and Florida limestone installed on commercial-grade landscape fabric. No decomposition, no annual refresh, no weed explosion. Install it once and forget about it for a decade.

Mulch Needs Refreshing Twice a Year in Florida. Rock Does Not.

Florida's subtropical climate breaks down organic mulch fast. By midsummer, the mulch you laid in March is halfway decomposed, compacted, and growing mushrooms. By fall, it looks tired. You either refresh it or accept beds that look neglected. At $40 to $80 per yard for quality mulch, that annual cycle adds up to $300 to $600 per year for an average property.

Decorative rock does not decompose. It does not compact. It does not grow fungus. It does not wash away in Florida's 50+ inches of annual rain when installed on proper fabric. The rock you install this year looks the same in 5 years, 10 years, and beyond. Your only maintenance is an occasional leaf blow and rare weed pull.

Combined with drought-tolerant native plants in a xeriscape design, decorative rock creates a landscape that requires almost zero ongoing input. No mowing, no mulching, minimal watering, minimal weeding. The upfront cost is higher than mulch. The 5-year cost is dramatically lower.

Popular Decorative Rock for Pinellas County Yards

River Rock

Smooth, rounded stones in natural earth tones. Available in 1-2 inch and 2-4 inch sizes. The most versatile option for beds, borders, and dry creek beds. Natural look that complements any landscape style. Most affordable option at $5-$8/sqft installed at 2-3 inch depth.

Mexican Beach Pebble

Smooth, dark gray to black rounded stones. Premium look that pairs beautifully with tropical plantings and modern architecture. Available in 1-2 inch and 3-5 inch sizes. Creates dramatic contrast against green plants and light-colored walls. $10-$15/sqft installed.

Crushed Shell

Florida-native shell material in white to cream tones. Light color reflects heat and brightens shaded areas. Coastal aesthetic that feels natural in Pinellas County. Compacts slightly over time for a more stable surface than round rock. Excellent for pathways. $5-$7/sqft installed.

Florida Limestone

Locally quarried light gray to tan stone. Available crushed for ground cover or as larger pieces for accents and borders. Alkaline nature can slightly raise soil pH -- beneficial for many Florida-native plants. Rustic, natural look. $6-$10/sqft installed depending on size grade.

Lava Rock

Lightweight, porous red or black volcanic rock. Good drainage characteristics and distinctive color. Popular for accenting specific beds or container plantings. Lighter than most options so it needs to be at least 3 inches deep to stay in place during heavy rain. $8-$12/sqft installed.

Pea Gravel

Small (3/8 inch) rounded stones in mixed earth tones. Excellent for pathways, dog runs, and between stepping stones. Compacts well for comfortable walking. Needs edging to stay contained. Most affordable option for large-area coverage. $4-$6/sqft installed at 2-inch depth.

Decorative Rock Questions

$5-$15/sqft depending on rock type. River rock and shell: $5-$8/sqft. Mexican beach pebble: $10-$15/sqft. A 200 sqft bed conversion: $1,500-$3,000 including removal, fabric, edging, and rock.

Far fewer than mulch. Commercial-grade woven landscape fabric blocks 95% of weed growth. Occasional weeds in surface debris are easily pulled. Rock beds need about 10% of the weeding effort of mulch beds.

Rock for low maintenance and longevity. Mulch for active planting beds where soil nutrition matters. We often combine both: rock in open areas and paths, mulch in active beds. Best of both worlds.

2-3 inches for most applications. Less than 2 inches shows fabric. More than 4 inches wastes material. Paths and creek beds benefit from 3 inches for stability.

Rock itself does not attract snakes. We install on tight fabric at proper depth to minimize gaps. Keeping beds clear of debris and maintaining clean edges reduces any wildlife concern.
