Hardscaping That Handles Florida Heat, Rain, and Sandy Soil
Paver patios, retaining walls, fire pits, outdoor kitchens, and walkways designed for Pinellas County conditions. Every project starts with a proper compacted base because nothing we build above grade matters if the ground beneath it shifts.
Why Florida Hardscaping Fails -- and How We Prevent It
Florida's sandy soil is the enemy of every hardscape project. Sand shifts, compresses unevenly, and washes out during heavy rain. A patio installed directly on sand or with a thin base layer will settle, shift, and develop uneven spots within 2 to 3 years.
Every hardscape we build starts with excavation to stable subsoil, followed by a minimum 6-inch compacted limerock base. Limerock binds together when compacted and creates a rigid platform that distributes weight evenly and resists water erosion. It is the same base material used under Pinellas County roads.
On top of the limerock goes a 1-inch bedding layer of concrete sand, screeded to exact grade. Then the pavers, stones, or blocks go down on a surface that will not move. This three-layer system is why our hardscapes stay flat and stable for decades while thin-base installations develop trip hazards within a few seasons.
Hardscaping Services for St. Petersburg Homeowners
Paver Patios
The foundation of every outdoor living space. We install concrete pavers in hundreds of colors, patterns, and textures on our compacted limerock base. Standard patios run 200 to 600 sqft at $12 to $25 per sqft installed. Includes excavation, base, bedding, pavers, edge restraint, and polymeric sand joints. See paver installation details.
Retaining Walls
Structural walls that hold grade changes, prevent erosion, and create usable level areas. Concrete block, natural stone, or timber. $25 to $60 per sqft of face area. Every wall includes drainage because Florida rain creates hydrostatic pressure that topples walls without it. See retaining wall details.
Fire Pits and Fireplaces
Gas or wood-burning fire features built from matching paver or stone materials. Built-in fire pits start at $2,500. Outdoor fireplaces start at $5,000. We handle gas line routing and connect to your existing service. Fire features extend your outdoor living season into Florida's mild winters.
Outdoor Kitchens
Concrete block shells with stone or paver veneer, granite or concrete countertops, built-in grills, sinks, and refrigerators. Range from $8,000 for a basic grill island to $25,000+ for full kitchen builds. We coordinate plumbing, electrical, and gas permitting for complete installations.
Walkways and Paths
Paver or natural stone walkways that connect driveways to front doors, patios to pools, and living areas to garden features. $10 to $20 per sqft installed on proper base. Proper walkway design improves curb appeal and eliminates muddy shortcuts across the lawn.
Seat Walls and Borders
Low walls (18-24 inches) that define outdoor spaces, provide built-in seating around patios, and frame planting beds. Matching block or stone to complement your patio material. $20 to $45 per linear foot installed. Popular addition to patio projects that eliminates the need for extra outdoor furniture.
Seminole Backyard: Patio, Seat Wall, and Fire Pit in 8 Days
A Seminole homeowner wanted to transform a bare backyard into an outdoor living space. They had a 3,200 sqft backyard with nothing but St. Augustine grass and a concrete slab from a removed screen enclosure. The slab had cracked and settled 2 inches on one side.
We demolished the old slab, excavated to 8 inches below final grade, and installed our compacted limerock base across the entire 450 sqft patio footprint. We built a curved seat wall along two sides of the patio using Belgard Weston Wall block in Bella blend. A gas fire pit centered in the patio connects to the home's existing gas service.
The remaining yard was regraded to drain away from the patio and house, then sodded with Zoysia. Total project: $14,800 for the patio, seat walls, and fire pit, plus $2,200 for grading and sod. Completed in 8 working days. The homeowner uses the space 4 to 5 nights per week from October through April.

Paver patio: 3-5 days. Add retaining wall: 2-3 more days. Fire pit: 1-2 days. Full outdoor living space: 2-4 weeks. Includes excavation, base, installation, and finishing.
Patios and walkways at grade: no permit. Retaining walls over 4 feet: permit required. Outdoor kitchens with gas/electric/plumbing: building permit required. We handle all permitting.
25-50 years on a proper compacted base. The pavers are nearly indestructible. Failure comes from inadequate base prep, not the pavers themselves. Our 6-inch limerock base prevents shifting and settling.
